Reps’ bill prescribes 4 yrs imprisonment, N200,000 fine for female circumcision

Vanguard reports that bill for an act to amend violence against persons prohibition act and also increase the penalty of offence for female genital mutilation has passed through the second reading on Wednesday in the House of Representatives. The bill was sponsored by Ganiyu Johnson, it prescribes 4 years imprisonment or a fine not exceeding N200,000 for any person that engages in female genital mutilation or engages others to carry out the circumcision. According to him, the new legislation would help in putting a stop to the practice. The house also passed a second reading bill for an act to amend the legislative houses, powers and privileges act 2017.

They would also be convening a meeting for stakeholders in the educational sector in a bid to consider reviewing the primary and secondary school curricular so that anti corruption awareness courses can be implemented, this would be done in a bid to fight against corruption, the motion was sponsored by Femi Gbajabiamila who is the speaker of house of representatives, Hon. Aisha Dukku, Musa Bagos and Hon. Shehu Kakale.
