Authorities in South Florida reported that a 19-year-old Florida State University student who had no prior arrests was discovered biting the face of a deceased man on Monday at the scene of a fatal stabbing.

Austin Harrouff may have been under the influence of hallucinogenic substances when he attacked John Stevens III, 59, and Michelle Mishcon, 53, in their Tequesta, Florida, home, according to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.

Harrouff, a 19-year-old Florida State University student, was enjoying supper with his parents at a nearby sports bar late Monday when he allegedly became enraged and walked out, according to Martin County Sheriff’s investigators.

The Miami Herald reports that Martin County Sheriff William Snyder informed reporters today that Harrouff had been traveling with some of his FSU fraternity mates to his birthplace of Tequesta.

Police discovered Harrouff in the middle of a frightening scene after he had left the restaurant, probably angered by the poor service.

Harrouff approached a married couple — identified as Michelle Mishcon, 53, and her husband John Stevens III, 59 — who were sitting comfortably in their garage with the door lifted in what Snyder called a “totally unprovoked and arbitrary attack.” The pair was then allegedly fatally stabbed by Harrouff with what the police believe to be a switchblade. A neighbor tried to step in and dial 911, but Harrouff also stabbed him.

When the police came, they discovered Harrouff “grunting and growling” and “making animal noises” over one of the dead while apparently biting off portions of the man’s face.

Police shot Harrouff with stun guns several times but were unable to remove him from the attacker. Even a police dog was powerless to halt Harrouff. It ultimately needed three police officers to remove him. According to reports, the neighbor who survived the attack underwent surgery today. It is anticipated that the neighbor will live.

“He’s getting better. His left side of the head and back both had several stable wounds, according to his father Steve Fisher.

After the event, Harrouff was also taken to a hospital for treatment. He is in life-threatening condition, according to officials, and his prognosis for survival is uncertain.

However, Harrouff’s online footprint reveals that in 2013, the college student seemed to have it all together.

According to Harrouff’s profile on ncsasports.org, he was pursuing a football scholarship while completing AP credits in high school and graduating in 2015. Harrouff’s recruitment profile stated that he stood 6 feet tall, weighed 200 pounds, and had a high school bench press capacity of 365 pounds.

This week’s crime will always be linked to that of Miami resident Randy Eugene, who made headlines in 2012 after being discovered chewing the face of a homeless man beneath the MacArthur Causeway.

Although there isn’t much proof, several people have theorized online that synthetic substances may have been involved in both cases. In 2012, toxicology findings revealed that Eugene had only marijuana in his system, despite the opinion of medical professionals who believed it was highly unlikely that marijuana alone had caused the attack.

William Snyder, the sheriff, said. Snyder informed reporters that while a motive is yet unknown, the use of a narcotic like flakka has not been ruled out. According to Snyder, authorities are conducting tests for a variety of chemicals.

He did give some indicators that we might be working with flakka or bath salts, which are known to create what we refer to as the excited delirium, so Snyder said they would sample his blood to check if they were there.
